Current Projects

gco2 uses a portfolio approach for the reduction of greenhouse gases. When our customers offset with us the emission reduction orders are added to our liabilities and gco2 will ensure the emission reduction is realised through one or a number of projects in accordance with our benchmarks.

Our portfolio approach is used due to the fact that we often source and fund projects based on forecasted emission reductions and there may be circumstances where a project may underperform. In such circumstances gco2 will make up the emission reduction for our customers through another project of equivalent quality. Customer offsets will only be removed from our liabilities when the equivalent emission reduction has been realised in line with our stated benchmarks and certification commitments.

Featured Project

gco2 is financing the development of a Biomass project in Guatemala.

The primary objective of the project is to supply Guatemala’s rising demand for energy due to economic growth and to improve the supply of electricity, while contributing to the environmental, social and economic sustainability by increasing renewable energy’s share of the total Guatemalan electricity consumption.

The project will use bagasse, a by-product in the production of sugar to produce clean energy that would displace energy that otherwise the government would have provided with a generation system that depends heavily on fossil fuels.

This project adheres to gco2’s benchmarks of measurability and verification as the project is compliant with a methodology supported by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The project is fully additional as the project development is not a result of any legislative requirements. Also, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) analysis by the project verifier shows that the project would not be financially viable without the additional funding generated from offsetting.

It is anticipated that the project will be certified by the Clean Development Mechanism . The anticipated carbon credits generated by this project will only be used to offset customer sales as and when they are certified by either the Clean Development Mechanism or the Voluntary Carbon Standard.
